English post-rock outfit 65daysofstatic has released new single “popular beats,” one of the tracks from their new album replicr 2019. The new album is set to come out on 27 September via Superball Music. Check out the tracklist below.
“Popular beats” as a heavily electronic single reflects their excellent instrumental skills, spanning from drum to bass, techno to glitch. This is not merely repetitive intelligent techno but multi-layered dance music. It starts with simple drums and claps, gradually adds snare and hi-hat sounds with drums and strong bass effects to create a dark and mysterious color. The music is experimental enough to reach IDM aesthetic and does not lose its noises and emotions until the last second.
Produced as an animated music video, the visual art of “Popular beats” is futuristic. Black and orange as two main colors in the video increase the fraught tension of the whole clip. Computer typed words follow the tempo and the changes in the music hand-in-hand. During the track, changes in the words reach a peak point when the music is climactic. The words and frayed-nerved sounds match together in a perfect way that gives listeners a pulse of ups and downs. It’s uneasy, triggered and relentless, all at the same time.
The band, composed of instrumentalists Paul Wolinski, Joe Shrewsbury, Rob Jones and Simon Wright, launched a special project titled U/U Vol.4 this year. It’s a subscription-based service which will release new EPs every month to their subscribers from May 2019 to April 2020. The band will unleash Ptolyweirds in August, following Looped Future EP in July, Fugue State EP in June and Kazmir EP in May. 65daysofstatic previously released experimental algorithmic song “Z1” in 2017.
