Sister Nancy, born Nancy Russell is a Jamaican Dancehall DJ and singer, she was the first female to grace the scene that she has become an iconic voice of – leaving her conservative roots at a young age to follow in the path of her DJ brother Robert Russell, better known for his stage name Brigadier Jerry.
The release of her reggae anthem ‘Bam Bam’ in 1982, (a cover from a 1966 record by Toots and the Maytals), determined her longstanding popularity and place in the history books of reggae music. The record, which has been sampled countless times by artists across a multitude of genres, is concerned like many others on the album it comes from – One Two (1982), with feminist values and cultural awareness.
Sister Nancy will be joined at the Echoplex in Echo Park, by Tom Chasteen and Mark Ernestus. Chasteen, a native to the underground LA music scene, has been running and deejaying the Dub Club – a world renowned and respected event celebrating reggae music, since 2000. Ernestus is a German record producer, DJ and owner of Hard Wax record store Berlin – a now institution, having built the foundations for the city’s 1989 electric club music scene, will contribute to the night with deep reggae and heavy dub.
Dub Club takes place at the Echoplex each Wednesday, featuring DJ’s and special guests. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience dub and reggae sets from a globally influential and talented group, who have been archetypal in producing and distributing this style of music.
