Squeeze, a classic band of the new wave, will play the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown LA on September 13 as part of ‘The Squeeze Songbook Tour’. Gaining notoriety on the British music scene from the late ’70s, with hits ‘Up The Junction’, ‘Cool For Cats’, ‘Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)’ and commercially successful in the United States for ‘Tempted’, ‘Hourglass’ and ‘853-5937’, Squeeze bridged the gap between classic British guitar-pop and Post-Punk.
Finding inspiration in the Beatles and The Kinks, after forming in Deptford, London in 1974, their music has a wry British charm. Deadpan commentary abounds from the lyricists of the band Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford, backed by the instrumental sounds that the ’80s are remembered for. Having initially broken up in 1982, to reform again in ’85, dissolving in 1999 and then reuniting in 2007 with Tillbrook (lead vocals, guitar), Difford (vocals, guitar), Simon Hanson (drums), Stephen Large (keyboard), Steve Smith (percussionist) and Yolanda Charles (bass guitar).
In 2015 they released their first album of new material since 1998 Cradle to the Grave, followed two years later by their newest release The Knowledge (2017) – within which Tillbrook and Difford have continued to exercise their compatibility as collaborative lyricists. The album operates in the same musical vain as the records they became famous for in their heyday between the late ’70s and early ’80s, providing an anachronistic window into the past that has beautiful views.
The Orpheum Theatre opening in 1926, was given a $3 million renovation in the late ’80s and is now the most restored historical movie palace in the city of Los Angeles.
