Legendary punk venue The Smell, in Downtown LA, will host Los Angeles based that dog with special guest; British singer-songwriter and painter Graham Coxon, on July 13. In celebration of their 25 year anniversary that dog member’s, from the 2011 reformation; Rachel Haden (bass guitar), Anna Waronker (lead vocals) and Tony Maxwell (drums), will play hits from the early to late 90’s.
The Smell, established in 1997, is maintained by one of its four founding members, Jim Smith and a team of volunteers. It is an all-ages, alcohol and drug-free venue, known for its DIY aesthetic. In keeping with the tradition of Los Angeles based underground clubs, The Smell has, over the years, become an kind of alma mater to punk and experimental bands; who gained notoriety in part, from the support that the venue provided.
With three albums, That Dog (1994), Totally Crushed Out (1995), Retreat From The Sun (1997) and a new album in the pipeline that invites collaboration from the public; that dog have an archive of lyrics and sounds that meander through punk-pop, exploring themes of teen-angst and unrequited love.
Former Blur member Graham Coxon, will join that dog, with over a decades worth of experimental indie music. Releasing his debut solo album, The Sky Is Too High (1998) on his record label Transcopic; Coxon has, over the years, developed a sound that blends folk and garage – while retaining a stylistic allegiance to the Brit-pop era.
This will be a show that revisits, with rose-tinted nostalgia, the distinct musical movements of the 90’s from two very diverse, cultural perspectives.
