In early June, New Zealand born and London based Connan Mockasin, will play three dates at Highland Park’s former Masonic Temple, Lodge Room. The musician, record producer and composer is best known for his etherial and blissfully fluid songs. Incorporating sounds and melodies from a range of genres and other-worldly soundscapes, you may wonder if, quite fittingly, you are being initiated into a cult.
With three albums Forever Dolphin Love (2012), Caramel (2013) and Jassbusters (2018), you can expect to be invited into a unique and eccentric energy field – not only via the unconventional montaging of music that creates a surrealist Rhythm and Blues, but through Mockasin’s peculiarly charismatic presence.
Mockasin’s most recent album Jassbusters, will feature on the soundtrack of Bostyn ‘n Dobsyn, a five-part film Connan has written; shot over ten days in Los Angeles – having taken shape over a rumored 20 year period. While all three albums have individuality, Jassbusters was Mockasin’s first studio recorded record and arguably his most stylized. With the previous two having been produced in various rooms; a room in a London apartment and a hotel room in Tokyo. The expansive musical milieu Mockasin has built up over three albums and nearly a decade, does nothing but demonstrate his multifaceted talent and ability, this is musical expression worth experiencing in live performance.
General admission is for all ages, with tickets costing $25.
Doors are at 7.30pm for all dates; June 4, 5 and 6.
