Over the past week or so, America has been grieving the loss of rapper Nipsey Hussle, a major force in South LA who lifted the community through his philanthropy and inspirational works in music and culture. The likes of Drake, Snoop Dogg, Pharell, LeBron James, Chance the Rapper, and even former president Barack Obama have come forth to acknowledge and pay tribute to Hussle’s life and altruism.
Sadly, the ugliness does not end there. Last night, at Hussle’s 25-mile long funeral procession after his memorial service at the Staples Center, violence erupted during a drive-by shooting which left 3 injured and 1 deceased. People Magazine reports on the shooting, which according to the Los Angeles police involved 3 black males and 1 black females each aged between 30 and 50 years old. The suspected agitators had opened fire against them from a grey Hyundai. Los Angele Police Chier Michael Moore tweeted about the incident, urging for an end to this “senseless violence.”
Nipsey Hussle, whose real name is Ermias Joseph Asghedom, was tragically shot during a gang-related crime on March 31 outside The Marathan, his clothing store nearby Crenshaw Boulevard. Since then, Asghedom’s suspected killer, Eric Ronald Holder Jr. has been charged by the Los Angeles County Distric Attorney’s Office on one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of firearm by a felon. However, on April 4, Holder Jr. pleaded not guilty despite also being accused of shooting two other victims, Kerry Lathan and Shermi Villanueva.
