Okilly Dokilly – Howdilly Twodilly

Simpsons inspired tracks

Debuting their second studio album, Howdilly Twodilly, Okilly Dokilly continues to mystify and own the path they’ve taken. Ironically, this metalcore American band is, as advertised on their official website, the world’s only “nedal” band. “Nedal” means that this band plays metal music themed around the fictional, animated character Ned Flanders from the show The Simpsons. For those unfamiliar with the show, Ned Flanders is an overly religious, good neighbor that is kind to all and has evolved into a caricature of conservatism.

Not only are most of the bands’ lyrics quotes from the show, but the members of Okilly Dokilly also all dress up as Ned, with his signature glasses and green sweater. Taking dedication a step further, each member has their own nickname that claims them as different versions of Ned such as “Head Ned” or “Shred Ned” and more.

What sounds like a full-on country album due to the folk-sounding title, is actually filled with screaming, groggy vocals that punctuate recognizable quotes from Flanders. But, there are surprises throughout the album in terms of the vocals displayed. Even in the first song, fans are greeted with the familiar inflections of Head Ned, but near the end of the song, the impression changes. Softly spoken lyrics are backdropped with simple pluckings from the guitar that create a beach scene. As quickly as it came, the song shifts back.

Throughout the album, there are a few songs of similar nature that go back and forth between two opposing styles that come together in Howdilly Twodilly. Out of the 11 tracks, the final one, “Fokilly Dokilly,” stands out among the rest because it transports listeners to a country bar with a live band playing. With this feeling, the scene is set with people linking their arms and spinning around. From the album title, this is the kind of vibe that people would expect to hear if they did not have prior knowledge of the band and its origins.

Even if people don’t watch The Simpsons, they can find enjoyment in listening to Okilly Dokilly’s latest album. With clear instrumental skills across and vocals that are clear through the groggy screaming, Howdilly Twodilly proves that the band has more to offer and that there is more to draw from Ned Flanders.

Erin Winans: Hello! I recently graduated from James Madison University. From JMU, I received a B.A. in English & Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communication (WRTC). In English, I concentrated in creative writing and in WRTC, I concentrated in writing and rhetoric. So, in my mind, they balance each other out. Since the middle of summer, after I finished my internship at Study Breaks Magazine, I've been writing for two sites. They both operate based on sending in a pitch if you have an idea. For one site, I write about movies and for the other, I write about personal topics and experiences. Now, joining mxdwn will let me expand my horizon by writing about music!
