Moogfest has announced its special 15th Anniversary line-up, which includes the likes of A Place To Bury Strangers, GAS, Tim Hecker, The Field and Kimbra. This Durham, North Carolina event will take place over four days from April 25 to 28, during the start of the peak music festival season in the United States.
Moogfest is the premiere experimental electronic music festival, which was founded to honor music pioneer Robert “Bob” Moog, the inventor of the MOOG Synthesizer. The MOOG Synthesizer was one of the first commercially available synthesizers, which helped pioneer the development and popularity of electronic music for a commercial audience.
Unlike other electronic oriented festivals such as the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, MOOG Fest is more catered toward technological advancements, unique artist-attendee interactions and sounds that are absent from many other typical festival performances. These include seminars based on music technology and even four hour long concert performances, which A Place To Bury Strangers are scheduled to partake in.
While many experimental and ambient composers are spread across the diverse line-up dance music will not be missed as many techno artists such as The Field, Stephan Bodzin and Mor Elian take part in the festival. Artists from a wide-range of genres including but not limited to IDM, synth pop, noise rock and dark wave will take part in the festival.
Although the festival originated in New York City, on behalf of the Moog Music Company’s representative in area, the festival eventually moved to North Carolina, the home state of Bob Moog. Past headliners include the influential kraut rock group Kraftwerk, pioneering ambient and glam rock artist Brian Eno, trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack and acclaimed electronic dance producer Moby.
A Place to Bury Strangers have had a busy year releasing their album Pinned during the spring of 2018, setting off numerous concert performances including Desert Daze in Southern California. These tour dates also included an appearance at the famous SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.
Earlier this month the band released a new track entitled “Chrome Shadow,” which is set to be part of the band’s upcoming vinyl only Fuzz Club Session LP. This latest release sees the noise-rockers continuing their trend of going toward a more industrial based sound with their music, which is present throughout the LP.
As one half of Kompakt, in addition to his acclaim as a compose and ambient musician Wolfgang Voigt, better known as GAS has mesmerized audiences for years. His latest album release as GAS, Rausch, was released last May.
As explained by mxdwn’s Drew Pitt, Rausch ” is a monolith to the power of dark ambient, forcing listeners to confront the weight of time within its walls. Rausch could be the album to define ambient for the year, it’s unlikely any album will be able to topple it within its genre.”
Earlier this month singer Kimbra released a music video for the track “Lightyears,” off her album Primal Heart, released last April. The track was in anticipation for an upcoming remix of the titled song.
