Iceland’s annual music festival is set to erupt again this coming November. Iceland Airwaves has announced its first set of artists included in this year’s lineup. Some prominent names include the multi-talented singer-songwriter Mac DeMarco and London alternative rockers, Shame. The festival will be held in the country’s capital, Reykjavik, which boasts alluring landscapes and scenery, and will span four days, from November 6 to November 9. The festival has a rich history, beginning in 1999 initially as a one-off event held in an airplane hangar. Airwaves has blossomed into a yearly staple in Iceland’s cultural and tourism calendar, as the festival transforms downtown Reykjavik for four unforgettable days filled with great music and people from all over the world. Last year’s edition even saw a 50% female lineup for the very first time. Over the years, Airwaves has also been known to feature up-and-coming artists early, such as the likes of Florence + The Machine, Sufjan Stevens, and James Blake.
Included in this first wave of artists announced is Canadian talent Mac DeMarco, known for his distinctively jazzy and wavy music. DeMarco recently completed his first ever solo tour late last year. Swedish singer-singwriter Anna of the North, who has collaborated with artists like Tyler the Creator, is also set to appear at the festival. Iceland Airwaves will also feature prominent Icelandic acts like, Hatari, GDRN, and hardcore collective, Une Misére.
