Classic Punk: Ready to Start Riots
Even though the band has released 10 previous albums, Written In Blood is the band’s first album released since the retirement of founder and lead singer Jorge Herrera in 2017. With David Rodriguez taking over on vocals, this fast-paced record comes out the gate swinging. The opening track, “1312,” sets the tone for the rest of the album. Yelling politically charged lyrics “Thirteen twelve, A.C.A.B.” (All Cops Are Bastards) makes you pick a side from the get-go. This phrase, and song in general, is a rallying cry to unite against corruption. The listener’s blood will be pumping ferociously upon listening to this track. Incorporating Spanish lyrics and emulating police sirens both in the intro and later with the guitar was also unique. They make their side known and force you to pick a side. THIS. IS. WAR.
The band maintains a fast-paced tempo through every track. It’s just like a live set list. The tracks are so short, it is easy to fly through several songs without realizing it. The lyrics, yelled as a crowd, make the audience want to join the band’s side. The album’s title track “Written In Blood” is fantastic! The bass intro has a gloriously aggressive tone. Next up is “Feed of fear” which features an uncharacteristic piano intro, but no-worries, after a brief instrumental they are right back at it again with their aggressive brand of punk rock.
“So Much Hate” is a bit of a weak spot. The gentle guitar intro does not pair well with Rodriguez’s raspy vocal style. This track highlights the lack of vocal techniques and styles used throughout the album. However, incorporating Spanish lyrics in tracks like “1312” and “Ya Basta” really brings a unique perspective to this album that should not be understated. There is an untapped market here that can be exploited, and they should experiment more with that avenue.
The final track “Borders” hits home hard. Chanting the lyrics “Fuck your president. Fuck your wall. Fuck your border and fuck you all” is a powerful way to wrap up this fast-paced, aggressive punk album. It’s good to see that the punk ethos is alive and well in our politically charged society.
