boygenius – boygenius EP

A force to be reckoned with

A powerful girl-group is hard to come by nowadays but thanks to Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridges and Lucy Dacus, our ears are being blessed once again. All three powerful, young women artists have made a splash in the indie music world over the last few years with their own style and take on the genre. By some stroke of magic, the three befriended each other and professionally blended their sounds together to create a six-song EP, boygenius, that was recorded over the course of four days.

The three take the time to perfectly digest personal endeavors, universal experiences, insecurities and sisterhood on the very short 21-minute EP. The members of boygenius, having different styles of music, all seem to blend cohesively and therefore cause such aw over a quick and fascinating bunch of songs.

“Bite The Hand” comes first off of the EP and follows the classic love song/heartbreak theme that we have come to know and love. Dacus takes the lead on vocals while both Bridges and Baker follow behind her sultry voice to make a roar of powerful women speaking their mind.

“Me & My Dog” is a standout hit on the EP with the helping hand from a building mountain of acoustic guitars and Bridges singing, “I had a fever / Until I met you / Now you make me cool.” Each song as intimate and dreamy as the next, “Stay Down” is a Baker-led track and combines clear and thoughtful melodies with attention-grabbing guitar riffs.

“Salt In The Wound” is a track that titters on the line of anger and sorrow. The three clearly, emotionally and directly visit ideas in the song they have all personally dealt with. The listener can hear the raw trust the three new bandmates have for each other as they sing, “Trick after trick, I’ll make the magic, and you unrelentingly ask for the secret.” The album ends on a tearful note with “Ketchum, ID.” Baker, Bridges and Dacus share a common ground of traveling the road and producing music as a young woman. Their raw emotion is heard with every lyric sung. The three make a deadly power group when it comes to indie music. United in their front, they accomplished such melancholy feeling, hopelessness and power in their words in the span of a few days.
