Joe Perry of Aerosmith Alert and Responsive After Being Hospitalized

A day after being hospitalized after a concert appearance Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry is recovering in a New York, the USA Today reports. Perry was described “alert and responsive,” after he was treated for “shortness of breath” backstage of a Billy Joel concert.

The guitarist was scheduled to perform a guest appearance with Joel during his regular Madison Square Garden concert on Saturday night. The episode occurred after Perry joined Joel onstage for a rendition of the Aerosmith song “Walk this way.” According to his representative, Marcee Rondan, Perry was treated by paramedics who “gave the guitarist oxygen and tracheal tube to clear his airway before taking him to a hospital.”

This is not the first time Perry has had health problems during performance. In 2016 Perry collapsed during a concert for Hollywood Vampires, a supergroup made up of Perry, Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp.

His collapse was blamed on dehydration and exhaustion. The band had regularly been performing five shows a week, for two hours at a time. At the time, bandmate Cooper said, “it scared the hell out of me.”

“The lyrics to (“Raise the Dead’), the first song we played that night, go, “Cardiac, heart attack… they never feared the reaper,” and I look around the stage and he’s gone. He was lying behind an amp on his back, and I went, ‘Oh, my God.’ We didn’t know what happened until after the show… We were doing 25 to 30 songs with no break. You’re in fourth gear, and there’s no 24-hour resting period. I think it just caught up with him. He finally got up there onstage, dehydrated. And I think he was exhausted. He told me the night before he hadn’t eaten in two days.”

Due to his recovery, Perry has been forced to cancel an appearance at the Rock and Roll Fantasy camp in Florida. However, his representatives expect he will be back on the road later this month. This is welcomed news for fans who hope to see him for his scheduled performance at the Franklin Music Hall in December.
