Devin Townsend announced dates for his upcoming solo acoustic, European tour titled, ‘An Evening With’ and his first date is March 7 in Delhi, India and runs through April 30. The intimate evenings will feature Devin performing tracks and taking part in a Q&A ,where fans will get to know more about Devin and the forthcoming new album Empath.
Townsend comments, “I have been busy making my newest recording, Empath over the past year. It has been a complicated and enlightening experience in that I have gone back to my roots in terms of what my motivations are for making music, in hopes that I am able to move forward as a musician being as true as I possibly can to my motivations.”
He also comments on his upcoming tour, “The time has come however for me to take the next step in my career, and when asked about how I would like to do so, I decided the first thing I would do was a very intimate run of shows that allows me to play my music stripped back to just me and a guitar. ”
Across all his bands and projects, Townsend has released twenty-three studio albums and three live albums. His upcoming album, Empath is set to be released in March 2019 and fans are slowly getting teases of what’s to come. In a recent mxdwn interview, Townsend opens up about his upcoming album.
Townsend recently disbanded the Devin Townsend project to focus on other projects, including the new album Empath. He states, “I think that the stage that I am at with Empath… There’s four really distinct styles that are present. What I think would be easiest would just be to do four more records how the Devin Townsend Project was with Ki, Addicted, Deconstruction and Ghost. But also, because I just went through a very singular period in my career with Devin Townsend Project, how developed it was, the idea of just repeating that again, doesn’t seem to be in line with what the motivations point me towards.”
Townsend draws influence from a wide range of music genres, most prominently heavy metal. Townsend has cited, among others, Judas Priest, W.A.S.P., Broadway musicals, ABBA, new-age music, Zoviet France, King’s X, Morbid Angel, Barkmarket, Grotus, Jane’s Addiction, Metallica, Cop Shoot Cop, Godflesh, Fear Factory and Rush as his influences. Townsend lists Paul Horn and Ravi Shankar as the “two most important musicians in his life”.
