A modern take on classic rock
Despite their retro sound, Greta Van Fleet is new on the rock scene. They formed in 2012, but Anthem of the Peaceful Army is their first full-length album, as they only had EP releases prior. Consisting of brothers Josh, Jake and Sam Kiszka, along with friend Danny Wagner, Greta Van Fleet sounds like a combination of Led Zeppelin and Rush, but they retain some modernity throughout. Though some may take pause to their heavily ’70s-influenced sound, for anyone who is a fan of classic rock, Greta Van Fleet is the perfect modern band, and Anthem of the Peaceful Army is a great example of that fact.
Anthem of the Peaceful Army begins with “Age Of Man,” a ballad of sorts featuring powerful vocals from Josh Kiszka and some beautiful guitar. It’s an interesting choice to begin the album, as it honestly feels more like it could easily be the climax of the album. However, it’s a great example of exactly who Greta Van Fleet is and what listeners should expect from this album. The second song “The Cold Win” sounds like it could easily be off of a Led Zeppelin album, as Josh Kiszka’s voice is uncannily similar to Robert Plant’s. The lyrics tell a story that seems to take place in a different world and time. “Leave me baby, I’m too far gone to save / The snow is comin’, all the village folk know / This wicked shiver chills me down to my soul.”
Some other notable songs off of Anthem of the Peaceful Army are “Lover Leaver,” “The New Day” and “Anthem.” “Lover Leaver” is another fast-paced rocker, with a memorable guitar solo about halfway through and some talented drumming from Wagner. It’s sure to be an instant classic for the band, as it’s full of soul, and is honestly catchy. “The New Day” is one of the more modern rock sounding songs on the album, though it still contains plenty of the classic rock inspired elements. Josh Kiszka’s vocals are lighter in this song, bringing positive vibes that make this song stand out so well.
Finally, “Anthem” is the token slow song off of Anthem of the Peaceful Army. What makes this song so notable, however, are the lyrics that are pertinent to today’s world. “With the news, there’s something every day / So many people thinking different ways, you say, where is the music / A tune to free the soul / A simple lyrics to unite us all, you know.” It’s a call to simpler times, where music could solve all, and that seems to be a huge part of the group’s overall image and message.
