With midterm election season just around the corner, senate hopeful Beto O’Rourke has struck up a friendship with Willie Nelson, appearing on stage to perform with Nelson few months ago. Nelson liked O’Rourke so much that he organized a concert to support O’Rourke, who is running against incumbent Ted Cruz in the November midterm. At this recent show, Nelson debuted a new song entitled “Vote ‘Em Out” as reported by CNN. The concert featured Nelson, his sons Lukas and Mika, and Leon Bridges among others. The free concert was desinged as a way to rally support for O’Rourke, who has recently closed the gap on Ted Cruz in the polling leading up to the mid term elections.
The catchy little tune has simplistic but poignant lyrics that implore voters to make a difference this election season:
“Vote ’em out, vote ’em out.
and when they’re gone we’ll sing and dance and shout.
And we’ll bring some new ones in,
and they will start to show again
that if you don’t like who’s in there, vote ’em out.”
O’Rourke is no stranger to music as he hails from El Paso and once played in a band with Cedric Bixler-Zavala, lead singer of At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta. While the band never amounted to anything and both O’Rourke and Bixler-Zavala moved on to bigger and better things, it marked the beginning of a life-long love affair with music for O’Rourke.
Willie Nelson has been known for his outspoken political views, particularly when it comes to president Donald Trump, with an anti-Trump song “Delete and Fast-Forward” appearing on his 2017 album God’s Problem Child.
