Josh Homme Refuses to Play, Demands Security Let Fans Into VIP Area at Mad Cool Festival

Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme made a bizarre series of statements to the audience and to the security last Saturday night at Madrid’s Mad Cool Festival. Like many big music festivals, Mad Cool has an exclusive VIP section at the front, directly in front of the stage, something that did not sit well with Homme.

As reported by Loudwire, Homme took to the mic to demand that security let fans into the VIP area otherwise he would stop performing. The security would not budge and let anyone in the VIP area, so Homme took to the mic again to demand that fans be let into the VIP area, chanting “let them in, let them in” and getting the rest of the audience to join in. Queens of the Stone Age continued to play, and Homme continued to berate security until the band finished their set and walked off the stage.

This turn of events is particularly strange because Queens of the Stone Age are a mainstay on the global music festival circuit, and the vast majority of those festivals give special access to people who have VIP tickets. So, the whole idea of VIP’s getting special treatment and a special spot right in front of the stage is nothing new.

Homme has become known for his strange behavior on stage so it is not a surprise that he would act strange during a concert. Last year Homme infamously kicked photographer in the face at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas, (among other things) sending her to the hospital and landing Homme in hot water with the likes of the BBC, who suspended episodes of the children’s show Bedtime Stories that featured Homme as a guest.

Queens of the Stone Age are currently touring the world in support of their most recent release, 2017’s excellent Villians, which saw the band teaming up with mega-producer Mark Ronson.

You can watch footage from the band’s performance at the Mad Cool Festival in the player below. Homme starts to berate the security right at the start of the clip.
