Kvelertak Singer Erlend Hjelvik Quits the Band

One of the biggest success stories in the metal underground this decade was the emergence of Norwegian metal band Kvelertak, who rose from relative obscurity into one of the largest underground bands, developing a unique sound that won them a rabid fan following, including the likes of Metallica’s Lars Ulrich. In fact, Kvelertak even managed to get a coveted opening spot for Metallica on their recently-concluded European tour.

Unfortunately, the band is now experiencing their first major lineup change as Brooklyn Vegan has reported that lead singer Erlend Hjelvik is parting ways with the group. The frontman explained in a lengthy Facebook post that the toll of being in a full-time touring band has become too much and that he will be stepping away from the band he has fronted for over a decade. While he did not elaborate, Hjelvik will not be performing with Kvelertak at any of the Norwegian festivals the group is slated to play this summer.

As reported by Blabbermouth, the band has responded with social media post of their own stating that they have found a replacement for Hjelvik who will be making his first appearance with the band on July 20th at the Fjellparkfestivalen festival in Flekkefjord, Norway. The band also revealed that they knew for quite some time that Hjelvik would be leaving, so they were able to find a replacement and get them situated with relative ease. They also indicated that they will enter the studio soon to record a follow-up to 2016’s incredible breakthrough record Nattesferd, with a goal of releasing the new album in early 2019.
