With the Trump presidency in full-swing and punks around the world rallying to protest the administration and its policies, what better time to revisit one of punk’s most classic political tunes (though it’s more of a diss track against phony/trust fund punks), “Holiday in Cambodia”? That’s just what Bay Area bizarro-hard rockers Primus did when they brought out legendary Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra during their headlining set at The Greek in Berkeley, California.
While Les Claypool and company are more used to a funky groove, they had no problem laying down the tremelo riffs that define this 80s California punk classic. Biafro plays his part well, spastically spitting out the songs unforgettable lyrics, with a hearty chant of “Pol Pot / Pol Pot” appearing throughout the latter half of the song. The appearance came early in the bands set and came on the heels of another team-up, playing the Primus song “Southbound Pachyderm.”
Biafra is known to make political statements on his T-shirts (see the featured image, or here when he played with Dead Cross). While on stage with Primus on Friday night he wore a black shirt that read “Trump Hates Me” in big white letters.
