Fucked Up guitarist Mike Haliechuk aka 10,000 Marbles, has announced in a short interview with fansite Fucked Up Discography that the band’s time with independent giants Matador Records has come to a close. The news doesn’t come as a massive surprise for anyone who follows the Canadian hardcore band, as they haven’t released music through the label since 2014. At the end of the chat, which appears to be an email exchange, Haliechuk is asked if the Matador era has come to a close. The founding member of the band responds tersely, “It’s over,” and that appears to be the end of the interview.
Fucked Up signed with Matador Records for the release of their sophomore album The Chemistry of Common Life. A combination of the label’s high profile and several positive reviews from trendy indie-centric sites made them a popular favorite on college radio, the festival circuit, and even NPR. This came despite the fact that the group was lead by gravel-throated singer Damien Abraham aka Pink Eyes, and has a moniker that shouldn’t be repeated in mixed company.
The last Fucked Up album released by Matador was their fourth studio LP Glass Boys and several 7″ singles from the album. In the time since, the band has released some 12″ records through Bay Area heavy music label Tankcrimes (Year of the Snake, Year of the Dragon) and seminal metal and hardcore label Deathwish, Inc (Year of the Hare). The band will release the vinyl edition of their new single “High Rise” in July, also through Tankcrimes.
Earlier in the interview, the fan site asks Haliechuk whether “High Rise” is the next chapter in the Fucked Up saga. In news that will excite fans of the idiosyncratic melodic hardcore band, he indicates the 7″ is the prologue to something and “The [T]ower 7″ will make more sense in about a month.”
