Serj Tankian On Five Rock Songs Written For System of a Down: “Doesn’t Look Like That’s Gonna Work Out”

Lead vocalist, Serj Tankian, has announced five songs he has written for System of a Down will “not work out,” sparking a realization the new album is likely not happening.

In December, Tankian told Rolling Stone, “We have [attempted to make an album]. We’ve discussed it and we’ve played each other songs, but we still haven’t come eye to eye on how things should be done for us to be able to move forward with it. And that’s where it’s been.”

Tankian went on to discuss relations with SOAD, saying, “That’s the funny thing. When people don’t see a record, they assume the worst about your internal relationship. But the truth is we’re actually better friends – at least I’m better friends with everyone than I’ve ever been.”

SOAD, who formed in 1994 in Glendale, California, have released five studio albums including System of a Down (1998), Toxicity (2001), Steal This Album! (2002), Mezmerize (2005) and Hypnotize (2005).

According to Blabbermouth, drummer John Dolmayan revealed the band was working on their sixth album during a 2016 interview with Kerrang!, saying, “I want everyone on board and feeling good about it. That’s what we’re trying to accomplish right now. There’s a tremendous amount of pressure on us, though, because it’s been 11 years—at least 12 by the time it comes out.”

Now, in a newsletter blast, Tankian has confirmed the new album is on the rocks. “I have 5 rock songs that I wanted I do with SOAD but it doesn’t look like that’s gonna work out, so I am finishing those up to release them as a solo EP or possibly as a soundtrack for my film cause they are interrelated.”

Tankian is currently engaged with multiple projects including a score for the film Spitak, his Kavat Coffee line, an animated project The Russian and a yet untitled film that will likely premiere during the coming year. SOAD has not released new music in over a decade and news a new album is unlikely comes as a disappointment for fans.
