In an attempt to sonically access the multiverse, progressive rockers Coheed and Cambria have released their new single, “The Dark Sentencer.” The epic track runs over 10 minutes in length, and, according to Rolling Stone, will appear on the upcoming album. The group has yet to announce the release date and title for their new album.
In February, the group announced a tour that will begin July 6 in Miami, FL and run through August 12 in Phoenix, AZ. The upcoming album follows 2015’s The Color Before the Sun and marks the group’s ninth studio album.
On May 31, Consequences of Sound reports frontman Claudio Sanchez shared via tweet the “new concept story” that “will accompany the upcoming record.” Sanchez’s tweet describes a dystopian tale of elite overlords and prisoners trapped by the walls of dying stars: “Years ago, chaos cut through this atmosphere. The fractured worlds that inhabit this space were once locked in a force of uncontrollable destruction. Gravity was lost. Their planetary trajectories conjoined in one catastrophic collision, choking to remain viable even as the dying glow of their cores peek through the cracks and scars of those impactful moments.”
He goes on to say, “Weaving through the blacked out space toward the freckling of cracked planets, The Gavel moved like a funeral procession. In many ways, it was the end of life for the two prisoners being transported within its unmitigable walls, to the most deplorable and prized of the doomed prisons, known simply as The Dark Sentencer.”
