Bishop Nehru, the 21-year-old New York rapper who made his name on an MF DOOM-esque flow, internal rhyming and a vintage East Coast sound and aesthetic (indeed DOOM himself acted as a mentor and collaborator for the young rapper) has just released a new video for his track “The Game of Life.”
The song is also the fourth track from his recently released solo debut record Elevators: Act I & II (which also featured production from MF DOOM, and this time, also Kaytranada).
In his new video for the Kaytranada-produced track, Nehru worked with a crew of backup vocalists in New York City’s YouTube studios. Though the original track featured the Emmy-Award-winning James Hall Worship & Praise choir, the quintet supporting Nehru in this video does a fine job.
When asked about whether there was any difference between performing with live vocalists and hearing them over the instrumental in an interview with Vibe, Bishop Nehru answered “Mentally, there isn’t. But you can for sure feel the band more than the instrumental. Its like with a band you’re having an organized Jam session. You can add a bit of improvisation right there on the spot so that’s cool.”
“All my songs are kind of personal,” elaborated Nehru about the song itself. “But this one was about two people that I have known in my town who lived the same lifestyle for a bit but one saw the downside faster than the other.”
