Last night Patti Smith and her band played a special concert after the screening of the documentary film Horses: Patti Smith and Her Band at the Tribeca Film Festival. Taking the stage at the legendary Beacon Theater, Smith and her band had a few surprises in store for the audience, including guest appearances from Bruce Springsteen and R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe as reported by Spin. Springsteen came on stage to perform a stunning version of the iconic”Because the Night,” a smash hit single from Smith’s 1978 album Easter, and one that she co-wrote with Springsteen. Stipe then came on stage to join the two in an awesome rendition of “People Have the Power,” another hit single from Smith’s Dream of Life record.
Nearly 45 years into her musical career, Smith remains one of rock’s all-time great artists, having influenced countless bands with her poetic lyrics and stripped down musical approach. Smith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, and she continues to tour the world with her backing band. The film Horses: Patti Smith and Her Band documents Smith on a 40th-anniversary tour of her monumental debut album, Horses, which was one of the first punk rock albums to be released.
