Alternative rock band Belly comes back together after 23 years to release their new album DOVE. The Rhode Island band was formed in 1991 by singer Tanya Donelly from Throwing Muses, drummer Thomas Gorman, guitarist Chris Gorman and Fred Abong to play bass. Before forming the Band Belly the Gorman brothers were a part of the band Verbal Assault. Abong was involved in the band Vicious Circle before joining Belly.
Belly’s first album Star came out in 1993 which was recorded in Nashville, TN and Liverpool, England. After the release of the band’s first album Abong was replaced by bassist Gail Greenwood. The band toured for Star in the US, UK, Europe, Japan and Australia with openings from the band Radiohead. The success of the album earned the band two Grammy nominations in 1994 for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Performance.
The band’s second album King , which had a more rock oriented sound than their first album, debuted in 1995. Following the album King was another tour in the US and the UK. A year after the release of the album King the band broke up and members pursued separate careers. Donelly pursued a solo career and released four albums under her name. Greenwood played in L7 for three years before touring with Bif Naked as bassist. Greenwood has been performing in band Benny Sizzler with partner Chil Mott since 2002. Chris Gorman moved towards the commercial photography business after the break up of Belly. Thomas Gorman played guitar and keyboards for Buffalo Tom, in 1999 he toured with Kristin Hirsh before joining his brother in the photography business. The band reformed in 2016 and began touring the United States and the United Kingdom with a mixture of old songs and new songs in the line-up.
Belly released the song “Shiny One” after not recording new music for 23 years. According to mxdwn “Shiny One” is the first collaborative song the band had done by sending each other parts of the song and piecing it together. The band came out with a music video for the single “Shiny One” on March 12, 2018. When drummer Chris Gorman heard that the band was naming the album DOVE he automatically thought about a crow mask he had bought a few years before for an “enchanted” Halloween party. Gorman was inspired with the idea for the music video by the Halloween mask he purchased years ago and his house being surrounded by woods. Due to scheduling each band member had to be shot individually using Gorman’s backyard as the backdrop for the video and his garage as the studio space.
