Every year at the Oscars the Academy shows an ‘In Memoriam’ montage of those in the film industry who’ve passed away. Eddie Vedder scored this year’s moment of remembrance with a cover of Tom Petty’s “Room At The Top,” from the album, Echo.
Vedder delivered a decidedly emotional rendition of a song that can’t help but evoke feelings of nostalgia and loss. When paired with footage like that, one can only interpret the song’s title phrase—‘room at the top’—in one of two ways. Petty’s song was the last slide of last’s night’s memorial, as he passed away this past October at the young age of 66.
Echo, the song’s album, was the tenth from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and reached number ten on Billboard’s 200. “Room At The Top,” one of the album’s three singles, helped the record reach the heights that it did.
