Brak From Space Ghost Coast To Coast Covers Suicidal Tendencies’ “Institutionalized”

Andy Merill, who joined Cartoon Network’s Space Ghost Coast To Coast television show in 1994, recently reprised his role as ‘Brak’ for a Suicidal Tendencies cover. Merrill’s character is a catlike space alien that factors into the show as its super villain. His cover of “Institutionalized” seemed to a mock a song that mocks everything. In this way, Brak’s cover is really an homage to the essence Suicidal Tendency might have strove for.

Brak released the song as part of a larger double album compilation called Dr. Demento Covered In Punk. One can assume it will be more zany covers of punk songs like “Institutionalized.” Merrill’s interest in Brak did not end with Space Ghost. Merrill has played Brak on four shows; the aforementioned Space Ghost Coast To Coast, Cartoon Planet, Brak Presents The Brak Show Starring Brak and The Brak Show. That’s a lot of Brak.

Merrill squeezing the last drops out of Brak over the years has been met with mixed reviews. Brak Presents The Brak Show Starring Brak came out in 2000 and was a Sonny and Cher type special that aired on Cartoon Network. The show had different animation from Brak’s previous worlds, and featured new songs and various celebrity guests. However, a sitcom that came out later in December 2000 called Leave It To Brak actually became the pilot for a then-new Adult Swim show, The Brak Show, which ran for three seasons. Listen to Brak’s new cover below.

Conrad Brittenham: My name is Conrad. I am one year out of college and pursuing a career in writing and journalism. I studied literature at Bard College, in the Hudson Valley. My thesis focuses on the literal and figurative uses of disease in Herman Melville’s most famous works, including Moby-Dick, Benito Cereno, and Billy Budd. My literary research on the topic of disease carried over to more historical findings about how humans tend to deal with and think about the problem of virus and infectivity. I’ve worked at a newspaper and an ad agency, as well as for the past year at an after school program, called The Brooklyn Robot Foundry. All of these positions have influenced the way I approach my work, my writing, and the way I interact with others in a professional setting. I’ve lived in London and New York, and have always had a unique perspective on international cultural matters. I am an avid drawer and a guitarist, but I would like to eventually work for a major news publication as an investigative journalist.
