As we all know, Tool has been working on the release of their new album for what feels like forever. Danny Carey (drummer) recently said that the album will “definitely” be out in 2018. James Maynard Keenan was asked on Twitter whether what Carey said was true, in which he had a short and vague response.

The followup to 2006’s 10,000 Days couldn’t come soon enough. To add to the anticipation, Tom Morello just posted a photo (see below) of himself and the band with the caption “Had the honor of being the first outsider to hear new #TOOL music today!! Still just instrumentals but sounded epic, majestic, symphonic, brutal, beautiful, tribal, mysterious, deep, sexy and VERY Tool. Really great. So excited to hear the record when it’s finished,” as mentioned by the Brooklyn Vegan. We know the song-making process Tool conducts: instrumental members create the sound, write the music and MJK adds his lyrics/vocals later. The musings of this new album and its progress has been buzzing for a few years now, and as we creep closer to the new year there have been more promising updates from Tool’s members, keeping us posted on how far along they are, and how near completion it is.
Tool will be on the hard rock festival circuit in 2018. They will also be playing Columbus, Ohio’s Rock on the Range (May 18-20th), and they’re also set to play Somerset, Wisconsin’s Northern Invasion, which happens May 12th & 13th. At that one, they’ll be joined by Maynard James Keenan’s other band A Perfect Circle, plus Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Avenged Sevenfold, Andrew WK, Anti-Flag, The Bronx, Mutoid Man and many more.
