According to EW, Scottish band Chvrches are coming out with their third studio album, following 2013’s The Bones of What You Believe and 2015’s Every Open Eye, both self-produced. For their third, they brought on big time producer Greg Kurstin, who has worked with the likes of Adele and Pink. Front-woman Lauren Mayberry reveals that the album will be their poppiest to date, saying “He’s done such big pop records, but they’ve always got a bit of saltiness in them,” Mayberry says. “He pushed what we were doing to be bigger in some ways, but he also pushed us to be weirder. He’d be like, ‘If the vocal melodies are as sweet and as precise as this, why don’t we make these other sounds so f—ed up and gnarly and strange?’ I loved that.”
Even the band’s writing process was altered during the production process. Typically, they finish the track (instrumentals) first and Mayberry adds her vocals/lyrics afterwards, this time she changed it up. “We were looking to have lyrics happen more naturally, as the music came,” she explains. “I would try to think of something in that moment or find something that already existed in a notebook and put it in there right away. It felt like the words and the music were more married, right from the start.”
Chvrches latest single “Warning Call” was featured on the soundtrack of a new video game, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, a reboot of mid-00s game Mirror’s Edge, released in 2016. The release date for their new album has not been mentioned.
