Julian Casablancas Changes Band Name to The Voidz and Announces New Album for 2018 Release

Julian Casablancas, most famously known as the lead singer of The Strokes, released s record with the band The Voidz back in 2014 called Tyranny, put out under the name of Julian Casablancas + The Voidz. The side-project offered up an important question for the future of The Strokes, and the 2014 Summer festival lineups seemed to show Casablancas playing both sides. Both The Strokes and Julian Casablancas + The Voidz had set times at 2014’s Governor’s Ball in New York City and Primavera Sound in Barcelona, and, as Stereogum reported, Casablancas even covered his Strokes songs during his set with The Voidz, to the surprise of Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr.

Both of Casablancas’ bands remain active however, with The Strokes’ last EP released in June of last year and The Voidz’ sophomore record now set for 2018. While there isn’t a set release date or album title known just yet, it has been confirmed, according to a trailer released today, that the band will now simply be known as The Voidz (previously Julian Casablancas + The Voidz). The name change is not due to a lack of Casablancas however, as the trailer details the band fully initiating Casablancas to become one of The Voidz.

In an 80’s style 4-minute short film entitled “Sly Boots: The Last Blood Rites of the Crystal Mindgoblet,” Casablancas seems to be initiated into the group by drinking from the “crystal mindgoblet,” before leaving the theater and being branded by the band in an alley. “What is in a name anyhow?” is said through voice-over before the branding takes place, followed by the announcement “NEW ALBUM 2018″ in big red letters.” The band name has officially changed from ‘Julian Casablancas+The Voidz’ to just ‘The Voidz,'” reads the press release, “Here’s how it happened… true story.”Previously, the band released three new songs just this past October, and performed some other newer material last September in Santa Ana, California. A tracklist for the 2018 Voidz record has yet to be released as well. Watch the full trailer directed by Warren Fu below:
