Actor Justin Long and band CHVRCHES are coming together to present a holiday variety show Dec. 13 at the Henry Fonda Theatre. With artist Reggie Watts recently added to the lineup, the event is set to raise money for organizations Girls Home and No Kid Hungry. Members of CHVRCHES, Death Cab For Cutie and comedians Pete Holmes, Nick Kroll, Cameron Esposito and many more are to perform. Muna, the Pierces, Computer Games and Jenny Owen Youngs is also to perform that night. Tickets are currently on sale now for $40 via Goldenvoice.
“The reason I’m so excited about this concert and so grateful to the artists who are donating their valuable time and talent is because I know what a long way it will go – and how much hope it will provide kids who would otherwise be facing a future with so little hope, if any,” Long said about the event.
Both Long and Lauren Mayberry of CHVRCHES came up with the idea of a benefit due to their love for the two charities, with Long having a history behind the Nicaraguan-based Girls Home. He initially introduced Mayberry to the organization. The home is for at risk youth females ages 4 to 18 who are born into poverty, often coming from homes affected by drug addiction or prostitution. The organization derives their funding from charitable donations and is run by the Madre Albertina order of nuns who protect and educate the girls in order for them to have a chance of a better life, according to a press release.
US-based No Kid Hungry is an organization working to provide kids in need with healthy foods; they also work to provide families in those communities with the necessary cooking skills to prepare nutritious foods. Long discovered them after watching a documentary on food insecurity in the United States, according to a press release.
“I learned about the Girls Home from Justin and wanted to help by doing the thing I know how to do best – putting on a gig,” said Mayberry about the event. “We were so touched at how many of our friends jumped on the bill without hesitation and I am excited that this event, for two great causes, will be the first show CHVRCHES has played in over a year.”
“Both the Girls Home and No Kid Hungry are groups that really make a tangible difference in children’s lives and, in the current global political climate, it feels more important than ever to be engaged and get involved with organizations who work on a grass roots level to help communities,” Mayberry said.
