Living Legends is an American hip hop collective consisting of six indie hip hop artists from the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Japan and Europe. The group was founded by MCs The Grouch, Sunspot Jonz, and Luckyiam. Beginning in the early 1990s, the crew quickly garnered a cult following through recording, promoting and performing their music independently through Legendary Music. The group has released a plethora of releases, including four full-length albums and 10 compilation albums.
The collective is considered by LA Weekly, according to a 2008 article, to be “one of the biggest success stories of the indie-rap movement, having sold close to 300,000 units of their various solo and group efforts — all by them-damn-selves.”
Hieroglyphics is an American underground hip hop collective based out of Oakland, California. Composed in the 1990s, the supergroup was founded by rapper Del the Funky Homosapien. The collective currently consists of nine rappers: Del the Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, producer/manager Domino, DJ Toure, and the four individual members of the rap group Souls of Mischief: Phesto, A-Plus, Opio, and Tajai.
Hieroglyphics are known for combining dynamic sound cues and deep lyrics, along with unique, groovy, or jazz-influenced beat samples. Hieroglyphics have found a huge cult following mainly due to their live concerts, podcasts and pure website promotion. The group has released three full-length albums, a live album and seven compilation albums.
Hailing from South Central Los Angeles, The Pharcyde became a hip hop collective in 1989. They originally started off as an aspiring dance group. The current members consist of Imani and Bootie Brown, with past members being Slimkid3 and Fatlip. The group has released four full-length albums, including their famous 1992 debut album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde. The album went certified Gold and churned out hit tracks like “Passin’ Me By.” Their second album, Labcabincalifornia, produced singles like “Runnin'” and “Drop.” They’ve also released four compilation albums since 2000.
