Bash & Pop and Nicole Atkins have announced a collaboration on Fat Possum Records. A two side limited edition 7″ will be released on November 24th. However, fans can rejoice a bit sooner-the first side “Too Late,” has been released digitally and on streaming sites.
Bash & Pop, more well-known amongst ’90s music aficionados, reformed in early 2017 to release Anything Could Happen. The reformed group consists of frontman Tommy Stinson from The Replacements, as well as lead guitarist Steve Selvidge, drummer Joe Sirois and bassist Justin Perkins. Their latest album was well-received critically with magazines like Rolling Stone, and shows like The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The group has spent early 2017 touring, and just began their second leg of touring yesterday in Pittsburg. They will finish up the year in Brooklyn on October 22nd.
Atkins herself recently released her fourth studio album, Goodnight Rhonda Lee, with was heavily praised by The New York Times, Time, Conan and Letterman. The album is soulful release inspired by the likes of iconic artists like Dusty Springfield, Loretta Lynn and Janis Joplin. Atkins is also busy on tour, but dedicated time to record “Too Late,” and “Saturday,” with the group in Nashville.
“Too Late,” is a song that Stinson wrote about 12 years before, but never could get quite right. Stinson notes that when he heard Atkins most recent album, “a light bulb exploded,” and he realized Atkins was the key to finally completing the song. Atkins added her soulful chops and her intuitive arranging/producing skills to the tracks. Both Stinson and Atkins have expressed mutual admiration for each other, and an excitement for the 7″ release.
