American soul singer Charles Bradley announced this morning that he would have to cancel all upcoming tour dates due to complications involving cancer. Bradley was diagnosed with stomach cancer last fall, after undergoing treatment and beating it, he returned to the road this past spring. Yet, according to a Facebook post, he recently has been feeling run down and learned that the cancer spread to his liver. Comments on the post were filled with overwhelming support, and Bradley was quoted as saying, “I love all of you out there that made my dreams come true. When I come back, I’ll come back strong, with God’s love. With God’s will, I’ll be back soon.”
Born November 5, 1948, Charles Bradley has only recently found large musical success. He was raised in New York before running away at age 14 and drifting around the country. Eventually, he settled in California, where he played small gigs for 20 years, often impersonating James Brown. After gaining some traction in the 2000’s Bradley released his first album on Daptone records, No Time for Dreaming. He went on to release two more albums, and tour extensively. The planned upcoming tour was his most ambitious yet, and it’s a tragedy he will have to cancel. With all the positive energy coming from fans, hopefully we can expect a quick recovery.
