Madlib Releases New Instrumental Track “10 Summers Old”

It may be pretty easy to imagine that the legendary producer Madlib is sitting on a lifetime supply of equally legendary beats, even throughout the past couple years where he had remained largely silent.

Though his last records came in 2014 with his joint album with Freddie Gibbs Pinata and his solo effort Rock Konducta Vol. 1-2, since then he has periodically been mentioned as a producer here and there, each time with typically stellar results. From “No More Parties In L.A.,” the beat he had produced for Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar, to the M.E.D. and Blu record Bad Neighbor and DOOM collab track “Avalanche,” Madlib has been consistently great.

Today, Madlib has released his first new music of 2017. It comes in the form of a 7″ record that is exclusively available at Rappcats.com and Technical Equipment Supply, a record store and label run by Todd Osborn in Ypsilanti, Mich. Osborn’s shop is the same place that exclusively released Aphex Twin’s latest 12″ record. The record’s two sides consist of new instrumentals titled “10 Summers Old” and “Barrel Proof.”

Before you start flying out to Michigan to grab a copy, don’t worry, Madlib has already made “10 Summers Old” available digitally, and it definitely does not disappoint. It has all of the classic Madlib trademarks, from the dusty soul excerpts to the ear candy samples. The horns in the track seem to come from Albert King’s “I’ll Play The Blues For You,” a song sampled in the past by Big Daddy Kane, JAY-Z and, most recently, Torae.

Over a year ago, he and Gibbs announced a sequel to their Pinata album, but, so far, that has not materialized.
