Prep yourself for next month’s festivities with the upcoming Sunstock Solar Festival at the Magic Box Saturday September 9, 2017. The one-day festival is set to feature artists Ra Ra Riot, Robert De Long, Run River North and others on the gold stage; Chris Whitehall of the Griswolds, Trapdoor Social, the Soft White Sixties and more will be on the green stage. The festival will also hold talks and workshops by actress and activist Frances Fisher, The Carbon Underground CEO Larry Kopald and director Louie Schwartzberg. Organic food trucks will be available along with solar-powered light installations, art, games, music, sustainable vendors, special guests, workshops and speakers, all meant to bring local communities together for a greener future.
Sunstock began in 2016 with local bands including Cults, Wavves, The Allah-Las and more. Over 2,500 people were in attendance. Sunstock is the brainchild of Trapdoor Social, who also produce solar-powered concerts on tour around the country. Magic Box, a venue located in downtown Los Angeles, hosts various events and trade shows for the industries of art, design, fashion, film, television, advertising and the music industry. The all-ages show will engage festival-goers with the causes aimed to protect the planet’s future.
Headliners Ra Ra Riot are an American indie rock band from Syracuse, New York; they formed in 2006, playing shows at houses and venues around the Syracuse university campus. They went on to release two EPs, Ra Ra Riot (2007) and Can You Tell (2009) and four studio albums: The Rhumb Line (2008), The Orchard (2010), Beta Love (2013) and Need Your Light (2016). Spin Magazine described Ra Ra Riot as “a vibrant mix of keening strings, trebly guitar, bittersweet lyrics, and thundering rhythms that calls to mind a less apocalyptic Arcade Fire” in a 2008 feature on the band.
