Mastodon are arguably one of the most popular and talented metal bands still going strong in the 21st century, so any new music from them is always good news. Vocalist/guitarist Brent Hinds had discussed in the past plans to release a solo album entitled Cold Dark Place. The solo project would be combined with their latest release, Emperor of Sand (see Brann Dailor dish on it here), yet fans know that wasn’t the case.
The album was brought up even as late as June of last year, where Hinds touched on it and the material in an interview with Guitar World. “One is an album I wrote myself, and recorded with Brann and Troy during Once More Round the Sun sessions. My part is called Cold Dark Place, and it has to do with a nasty breakup that I went through,” Hinds says. “I wrote some pretty dark, beautiful, spooky, funky, ethereal, melancholy music, which also sounds like the Bee Gees a little bit.”
Now, Cold Dark Place will see the warm light of day, only instead of a Hinds solo effort, it will be a full-fledged Mastodon album. While the band hasn’t officially confirmed a release or release date, there was a pulled Amazon listing which slated the album for a September 22 release. Oh and Hinds teased the whole thing on his Instagram if that means anything.
Mastodon will also be on tour this fall, stay tuned for more news on Cold Dark Place.
