Downtown Boys @ Underground Arts 11/16

American rock band Downtown Boys are certainly on the come up in the rock world. Dubbed as “America’s Most Exciting Punk Band” by Rolling Stones, the punk band clearly has what people call “it”. The band has released 3 EPs since they first formed in 2012. Downtown Boys are set to release their third EP, Cost of Living later this year. Current members of the band include Victoria Ruiz, Joey La Neve DeFrancesco, Norlan Olivo, and Mary Regalado. Joey La Neve DeFrancesco joined the band after famously quitting his hotel job.

Downtown Boys released their self-titled debut album in 2012. While the album itself didn’t do so good, the band did manage to gain a cult following on the web. Downtown Boys a self-titled EP via Sister Polygon Records in 2014. The EP helped increase the band’s fan base and more attention. Downtown Boys released a second EP, Full Communism via Don Giovanni Records in 2015. “Monstro”, the album’s lead single drew praise from various music sources including Pitchfork and Stereogum. The band performed songs off their new EP on the news show Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman.

Throughout their career, Downtown Boys has received high praise from some of the most respected media outlets. The New Yorker and Rolling Stones both have recommended their music to their readers. Downtown Boys have toured the US in support of their album while also appearing at various music festivals. Aside from music, Ruiz and DeFrancesco launched an online magazine, Spark Mag. The main focus of the magazine was to promote indie and underground artist sometimes overlooked by large magazines. In early 2017, Downtown Boys announced a third EP, Cost of Living to be released later this year.

Donovan Wilkins: Donovan Wilkins is a self-taught photographer and published writer. He lives in Glenside after moving from his hometown of Philadelphia. After studying Liberal Arts at CCP, he decided to focus his time on his writing and photography. In 2016, Donovan completed his first feature-length screenplay, The Coast is Clear. During his career, Donovan worked on a small budget film in Philadelphia as part of a writing team. Since then, he has written various short screenplays.
