For the first time in 8 years, LA pop rock duo Sparks is getting ready to release an album. Believe it or not, Hippopotamus will be Sparks 24th album. While you might not immediately recognize the name, Sparks has enjoyed cult following all over the world since their commercial debut in 1972. Before you say that you don’t know them, take a listen to “This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us.” Or more recently, you may be familiar with their collaborative project with Franz Ferdinand, FFS.
“Edith Piaf (Said It Better Than Me)” is the third single released off of Hippopotamus, and is every bit as glamorously synthy as one would hope. The song is a tribute to mid 20th century French cabaret singer, Edith Piaf. “Edith Piaf said it better than me” is the standout refrain in the song, and will be stuck in your head for the rest of the week. After 40 years and more than 20 albums, the song’s YouTube comments are still filled with love for Sparks.
Hippopotamus is slated for a September 8th release on BMG Records. The album is available for pre-order here, or you can check out the video for “What The Hell Is It This Time?” here. In addition to the album, Sparks will be heading out on a European tour, starting in Copenhagen, on August 7th.
