Yesterday, Belle & Sebastian released a new song, “We Were Beautiful.” This is their first new music in 2 years, since 2015’s Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance. On their new track, the Scottish group wishes to “rise above the present day” and does so through an upbeat, slightly psychedelic track.
Since 1996, the Glasgow group has been making critically acclaimed indie pop with a penchant for experimentation. “We Were Beautiful” fits perfectly into that tradition, the song lays precise lyricism over a fast paced synth beat. YouTube commenter Danilo Giacometti put it perfectly by saying, “I love how they explore different sounds over the years but anyway we always know it’s B&S playing.”As is common for Belle & Sebastian, somne of the most biting lyrics come alongside the sonically brightest portion of the track, “Making plans inside their head / Making love to shallow friends.”
Is this the start of a new album cycle for Belle & Sebastian? They’ve been releasing a new album on average every 2-3 years since 1996. With their last record released in 2015, a release this year or next would fit right in line with the band’s past. Only time will tell, but until then, you can stay up to date by following the band on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Starting July 29th, the band will be starting a tour that will bring them from New York to Asagiri, Japan.
