Musiq Soulchild @ Electric Factory 10/13

If you were born in the 90s, you’ve heard R&B singer Musiq Soulchild on the radio all day long. The Philadelphia native is back in his hometown for a special show at the famous Electric Factory this October. Musiq is known for his use of blending hip hop with R&B, funk, blues, jazz, and gospel. Since his career began, Musiq has received 2 gold albums and over 10 hit singles. Over time, Musiq has been hailed as one of the best R&B singers of the 90s generation.

Taalib Johnson, also known as Musiq Soulchild, got his start as a beatboxer for various MCs. Aside from beatboxing, Musiq also did a lot of scatting at local jazz clubs and acapella on the streets. Musiq has previously cited musical icons Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye as his most influential for his music career. Musiq Soulchild released his highly successful debut album, Aijuswanaseing, in 2000. The album follows the lead single, “Just Friends (Sunny)”. The album peaked at number 24 Billboard 200 Chart while peaking at number 4 on Billboard’s US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Musiq’s second album, Juslisen, was released in 2002. The album debuted at number 1 on Billboard 200 which made it his first number one album in his career. Musiq’s third album, Soulstar, went gold after being released in 2003.

Musiq Soulchild released three albums (Luvanmusiq, OnMyRadio, MusiqinTheMagiq) with Atlantic Records before deciding to become an independent artist in 2013. Since then, Musiq Soulchild has released Life on Earth, his first independent album. Aside from music, Musiq has also appeared in ad campaigns for McDonald’s, Nike, Levi’s, Coca-Cola, and Gap. Musiq Soulchild is also a published writer with his book titled “143 – Love According To Musiq”.

Donovan Wilkins: Donovan Wilkins is a self-taught photographer and published writer. He lives in Glenside after moving from his hometown of Philadelphia. After studying Liberal Arts at CCP, he decided to focus his time on his writing and photography. In 2016, Donovan completed his first feature-length screenplay, The Coast is Clear. During his career, Donovan worked on a small budget film in Philadelphia as part of a writing team. Since then, he has written various short screenplays.
