When Warpaint first started back in California in the mid-2000s, the group didn’t really know what would end up happening. But they found luck with their music (although years later) with their debut album The Fool that was released in 2010. And when coming up with ideas for their anticipated follow-up album, this all-female lineup had one thing in mind: write a sexy album. And so they did. They poured their chemistry into the record, gathered as much inspiration as possible from various genres, and went at it.
Their third record called Head’s Up came out last year on Rough Trade Records–an album that challenged them musically to change up their sound a bit and shake things up. So, why not make a record that’s more dancey and fun than their previous tunes (which are a splash darker and more intense in a dream-pop sort of way) and just go for it? Listen to songs like “New Song” and “The Stall” and you’ll hear how Emily Kokal, Theresa Wayman, Jenny Lee Lindberg and Stella Mozgawa have really embraced a new energy within the group.
Just recently Warpaint played Governor’s Ball, but now they return to New York to play something a touch more intimate in Williamsburg–a show that will still be full of color, a crazy sex-drive and a ton of energy. Their show is presented by Steve Madden Music and is free.
