Low Flying Hawks are an experimental group, currently based in Texas, consisting of two cryptically named main members. Vocalist/guitarist EHA and guitarist/vocalist AAL form the core of Low Flying Hawks. However, their rhythm section is very much a major draw for fans of artful guitar-based music. Returning on bass and drums for the band’s sophomore album are, respectively, Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle and Dale Crover of Melvins. This second release for Low Flying Hawks will be titled Genkaku and released on August 25, 2017 by Magnetic Eye Records. Joining the quartet will be Buzz Osborne of Melvins, who lends vocals to two of the album’s seven tracks.
Much like their 2016 debut Kōfuku, the new album promises to be filled with bleak, droning soundscapes. Think a shoegazier version of Sunn 0))). Osborne’s vocals will be featured on the opening song from Genkaku, titled “Smile.” He will also make an appearance midway through the record on the fourth song “Space Wizard”; producer Toshi Kasai also appears on the song, providing vocals, guitars and effects.

Crover has been particularly busy as of late, with Melvins readying their latest album (which is also their first-ever double record) A Walk With Love and Death on July 7, 2017. Adding onto the busyness, he will release a solo album The Fickle Finger of Fate on August 4, 2017. In fact, it’s not just any record, it’s Crover’s solo debut. He recently released a new single from the record, titled “Hillbilly Math.”
Last weekend, the Melvins were a part of Tool’s miniature festival in San Bernardino, which featured appearances by Primus, Chemical Brothers, and Fantômas. Speaking of Fantômas, Crover pulled double duty at the festival when he filled in for the band’s usual drummer, Dave Lombardo. Though to be clear, Lombardo is still the band’s drummer and Crover was playing in the band on a one-off basis.
