Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions @ Brooklyn Steel 10/22

It was in the thick of a 90’s scene when Mazzy Star emerged with their romantic watercolor sound (refer to the song “Fade into You”), but over time that dreamy vision came to an end, leaving leading lady Hope Sandoval on her own. This is when she linked up with the drummer from My Bloody Valentine, Colm Ó Cíosóig and started Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions.

Bavarian Fruit Bread was the name of their debut album that was released in 2001, followed by a long-awaited follow-up album called Through the Devil Softly that was released in 2010. And just last year they released their third album called Until the Hunter, which features a shining duet with Kurt Vile called “Let Me Get There.” It’s a song that indulges in Hope’s classic sound, which is subtle and lovely, breathy and fragile, and when mixed with Kurt Vile’s folky nostalgic sound, it’s a song that’ll make you swoon.

When it comes to Hope Sandoval and The Warm Inventions, though, you can’t help but wonder why so many years have gone by in between records when such goodness can be released (in that withering flower, beautiful sadness kind of way) but when it comes to their music, there is no pressure. It’s all about the music for this duo, which is personal and reflective and isn’t at all consumed with how to be in the mainstream. And when you watch them perform, as they fold into themselves and feel every little part of their music, you will undoubtedly be overcome by their intensity, their passion, and the magic that they share in every way together.
