To celebrate African American culture, there is no better place than the Afropunk festival. This week, the festival has released its official lineup for the 2nd edition of Afropunk Presents the Carnival of Consciousness Atlanta. The festival will occur the weekend of October 14th and 15th and will take place at Atlanta’s 787 Windsor. A festival that will feature groundbreaking icons and emerging artists. The purpose of the festival is to bring minded people together to create and exchange innovative ideas, to form a new type of immersive gathering. A creative blank space for everyone in the community.
Afropunk is a weekend-long, retreat filled with music, art, film and lectures. A festival of contemporary black expression and youthful black consciousness. The festival will present live music, sound performances, art installations and will feature collaborations across genres. Described by the New York times as “the most multicultural festival in the US,” Afropunk Atlanta will offer up an eclectic line up of talented musical artists give fans a diverse experience.
Just like Afropunk Brooklyn, Atlanta will share the same theme of “We the people.” The theme follows the festival’s manifesto that is based on the idea that we need to commit ourselves keeping the injustices served to the people alive. Part of the manifesto is filled with hope and urges a call for help that includes; “We, the people commit ourselves to uphold and fight for the rights enshrined in our code. Let us honour those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom, and hold accountable those who curtail our liberties. Let us walk in the footsteps of warriors who came before us, and strive to create a society based on fundamental human rights. Let us rewrite the universal laws and educate the errant minds….
We, the people have the will to heal the divisions that threaten to reduce our dreams to ashes. We believe in resurrecting the creative power of our diversity. We open our hearts and minds, and dance to the rhythm of a brand-new future. Together. Brave and compassionate. And beautiful.” It is a beautiful theme that showcases our humanity and brings people of all races, of all gender and all walks of life together as one.
Last year’s festival in Brooklyn featured performances from Ice Cube, Tyler the Creator, TV On The Radio, Janelle Monae, Flying Lotus and Cee Lo Green. Like before, this year’s Afropunk festival will host a variety of entertainers and artists that give fans and the community an experience that will open minds and create memories.
The official musical lineup was released recently and includes an amazing list of performers. These artists include; Solange, Willow Smith, Danny Brown, Flatbush Zombies, Young Feathers, Algiers, Moses Sumney, Sam Dew, Kevin Abstract, Princess Nokia, Jamila Woods, Loaf Muzik, Oshun, Arrow Benjamin and Zuluzuluu.
