The unthinkable happened at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester late Monday night, when a suicide bomber took the life of 22 victims and injured at least 59 people. Now, many prominent figures in the music industry are banding together to give their condolences and show their much needed support to those effected by the tragedy.
In an Instagram post by Lamb of God front-man Randy Blythe, he said “I am so sick of reading headlines like this. We as a race, THE HUMAN RACE, have to do better than this. A music concert is supposed to be a place where people gather to forget their problems for a few hours, not somewhere to roll the dice with your life.”
Dessa, member of indie hip-hop group “Doomtree,” took to her Twitter account to say “Manchester. I’m so sorry.” Johnny Marr from The Smiths also showed his support by tweeting “Manchester stands together,” and Peter Hook from Joy Division also tweeted “My daughter made it home safe from Ariana Grande last night. My heart goes out to all parents & those involved. Manchester stay strong. X.”
The Pet Shop Boys tweeted that they were “Grieving for Manchester and for all the victims of this savage attack last night. Love, Neil and Chris xx,” and Marc Almond showed his disgust with the attack by sharing “There are no words. Sickening and sadness and evil don’t begin to express feelings. Thoughts of Manchester today and for all lost.”
Metal heads Iron Maiden, Duff McKagan, Slash, and Myles Kennedy all shared their thoughts on the matter as well by posting either short message such as a hashtag saying #Manchester, or more lengthy ones like Slash who said “I can’t believe this horrible tragedy in Manchester. My heart goes out to all the victims, their families & friends. Unfuckingbelievable.”
Hip Hop star Drake posted his condolences on Instagram to the family and Ariana as well, sharing “We just left from touring in Europe and this was such a real fear we discussed frequently. I was crushed today to hear it became a reality. My condolences to all of the families affected and we will be praying for all of Manchester. Also I am praying on peace of mind for Ariana.”
Fellow rap artist Nicki Minaj who recently collaborated with Ariana Grande on a song for her Dangerous Woman album Tweeted ” My heart hurts for my sister, Ariana & every family affected by this tragic event in the U.K. Innocent lives lost. I’m so sorry to hear this.”
Lorde also tweeted “every musician feels sick & responsible tonight—shows should be safe for you. truly worst nightmare. sending love to manchester & ari” and Rihanna sent her best wishes by saying “#Manchester has always been so close to my heart! These are innocent vulnerable kids, this could’ve been any of us! I’m devastated!”
Musicians John Legend and Ellie Goulding both made sure to “send their love” to everyone effected at the concert that night.
Devin Townsend acknowledged the difficulty of showing support for Manchester victims by using social media and simply said, “So hard to say anything on social media about horrendous tragedy without seeming to try and draw attention to yourself or to offer prayers..” while DJ Z-TRIP called out the hectic world we’re currently living in by tweeting “Whoa, just heard about #Manchester. WTF? People, hug ur loved ones, tell em U love em everyday. U never know anymore.
