The xx have just announced an Iceland edition of their Night + Day Festival, which originally took place as an eight-day residency held at London’s O2 Brixton Academy back in March. The Icelandic edition will be July 14-16 in the city of Skógar, near the Skogafoss waterfall.
Night + Day Brixton involved concerts, film screenings and local fundraisers curated by The xx, which is comprised of Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim and Jamie Smith. For the Iceland installment, the band has recruited a lineup consisting of Kamasi Washington, Earl Sweatshirt, Warpaint, Sampha, Jagwar Ma and several others, including The xx themselves as well as Jamie Smith’s solo project, Jamie xx. The Brixton edition had some crossover, including Jamie xx and Sampha, but also included Cat Power, Floating Points, Francis & The Lights, and others. According to the Night + Day website, it is “a festival that celebrates the band’s favourite places around the world through unique collaborations with local artists and communities.” Film screenings include The Virgin Suicides, Cruel Intentions and Lost in Translation, and the different charities represented at the festival included Brixton Green, The Baytree Centre and the Marcus Lipton Community Enterprise.
Tickets are not yet available, but will be €169 for a weekend pass, which is about $184 U.S. dollars and includes camping on site. According to Consequence of Sound, the festival will be capped at 6,000 tickets. Food vendors and bars will be available, and the entire festival will be based on the Icelandic Kronur currency, although ATMs will be available and card can be used at the different vendors.
The xx were formed in 2005 out of London, England, and have since gone on to win a Mercury Prize as well as the recognition of peak positions on the Billboard 200. The band’s most recent album, I See You, was just released January through Young Turks, and has become the band’s second number one album in the United Kingdom. The band member Jamie Smith started his solo project as Jamie xx in 2009, and has since received critical acclaim for his music, including a Grammy nomination in Best Dance/Electronic Album for his album In Colour.
