Rostam Batmanglij, known simply as Rostam, has just released a video for his single “Gwan,” which features him taking a stroll throughout New York City. The singer both sings to the camera and lets its follow him through iconic New York City settings, such as Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park.
The video is a great match to the song’s slow and steady pace, which includes a violin outro at the end. As Rostam sets an easy pace throughout the city, he also sings, “All of those dreams keep coming back to me slowly, slowly…” Although NYC is commonly known for its hustle and bustle, Rostam manages to slow it down for his song, capturing intimate moments such as the sun setting through skyscrapers and kids taking photos on street corners. Rostam is a multi-instrumentalist who began his career with Vampire Weekend, before announcing via Twitter in 2016 that he left specifically to pursue solo projects. There has been no reported drama between Rostam and Vampire Weekend front man Ezra Koenig, with whom Rostam has said he will collaborate with again in the future.
Rostam announced his solo album in November last year to be released in 2017, but there has still been no word on a name or release date. As part of his solo career, he has released five singles, including “Gwan,” which include “Wood,” “Don’t Let It Get to You,” “Gravity Don’t Pull Me,” and “EOS.”
On “Gwan,” Rostam stated in a press release, “I’ve had experiences where my life will try to tell me something in a dream—and sometimes it’s something I’m not ready to hear. So I think maybe this song is about trying to listen to what your subconscious mind is trying to say to you.”
