French rockers, Phoenix, have announced the release of the band’s sixth studio album. To be titled Ti Amo and released on June 9th the via Glassnote, the LP will be the band’s first album in four years.
In a new New York Times article, guitarist Laurent Brancowitz described the vibe of the album as “summer and Italian discos.” Ti Amo was recorded in Paris late in 2014 as the country “underwent a surge in alt-right sentiment and endured terrorist attacks.” Following the attacks at the Bataclan and the police shut down Paris, effectively trapping the band in the studio. The location and timing of the album’s recording lent itself to the album’s leaning towards a darker and more serious tone.
“I think the record came out of darkness, out of concern,” said Daniel Glass, head of Phoenix’s record label, Glassnote. “But what’s resulted is this incredibly colorful record. And what we’re hearing from everybody, from KCRW to Apple to Pandora to Spotify, is that they’re loving this record. Because it makes them feel good.”
Ti Amo was recorded in an old opera house near the Pompidou Center, in the heart of Paris, that has been refashioned into a tech incubator, museum and concert hall. Starting in 2014, Phoenix took over space on the top floor, installing synthesizers and recording gear.
“We did a lot of experimenting,” singer Thomas Mars told the New York Times. “We could go back and say, ‘Let’s get the MIDI from February 12th,’ or, ‘Let’s get the first take.'”
