NE-HI @ Sidewinder 5/3

It all started in the summer of 2013 in an underground basement in Chicago, Illinois, when NE-HI was created. After helping with a friend’s film, the four guys decided to keep NE-HI going. The band consists of Jason Balla (guitar and vocals), Alex Otake (drums), Mikey Wells (guitar and vocals) and James Weir (bass). The band’s music can be described as alternative groove indie-rock. Knowing NE-HI surfaced from the underground scene in Chicago, hints of the usual grungy garage-ness is definitely noticeable throughout their songs.

Over the short time span the band has been together, NE-HI has released two albums and a few singles. Their first album, NE-HI, released in 2014, received notable attention as it was listed as “4^th BEST RECORD OF 2014” by Greg Kot in the Chicago Tribune. Offers was released earlier this year in February under Grand Jury Music. The songs on this album are full of surfy guitar riffs, easy-going melodies and the singer’s funky voice. As explained by Pitchfork, “NE-HI built these songs accordingly: They sound twice as developed.”
