Rodney Crowell recently performed “It Ain’t Over Yet” at his album release part in New York City and he brought out Rosanne Cash and John Paul White to perform a unique rendition of the song. The album Close Ties was celebrated at the New York’s City Winery March 30th and included not only new song performance but also Crowell signature “Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight” and “No Memories Hangin’ Round.”
The acoustic rendition of “It Ain’t Over” can be seen below being performed by the trio in perfect harmony also has a moving introduction by Crowell explaining the amazing but sad song was written about Guy Clark and his friendship, before Clark finally passed away. The lyrics directly pay homage to Guy Clark saying, “You don’t walk on water and your sarcasm stings, but the way you move through this old world sure makes a case for angel wings.”
Crowell recently told Rolling Stone in an interview, “I’ve lived long enough now that some of my contemporaries are starting to pass from the earth, so those relationships started coming to the fore as I was writing songs, relationships that were so personal and so evocative in my life had passed away, but here I am, still tickin’, still slippin’ along.”
Rodney Crowell’s legacy started in the mid 80s as he was recognized as the leader of the new traditionalist movement. Crowell was picked up by Jerry Reed, who after hearing Crowell perform his own single “You Can’t Keep Me In Tennessee” at a restaurant signed him and recorded the song two days later. His popularity quickly led him to the “city of angels” Los Angeles to grow his career by joining bands, creating his own, and eventually going solo in the 80s. The rest of his career has seen a rise in the country/ singer songwriter charts and the development of his legendary status. His newest album adds to his massive discography and furthers his legacy.
